What a cute little story this was! Someone over at Booklikes recommended it to me, and I'm so glad I followed through.
The Canterville Ghost is not scary at all, but it IS funny and as the story goes on, rather pitiful. I found myself laughing at some portions and then all but shedding a tear towards the end.
This is a short story which is available for free, or at least this version is, at Amazon, and you can add the Audio for a nominal fee.

After the pleasant surprise that was Lord Arthur Savile’s crime, I was looking forward to reading more of Wilde’s work. This one sounded hilarious, so I thought I’d give it a shot.
The beginning was just that, making me smile and give up a snort of laughter every now and then, especially surrounding the descriptions of the Otis family and the clichés of Britain-set haunted mansion stories. I really like Wilde’s sarcastic humour.
However, the story as a whole didn’t really hit the mark for me. Even though the audiobook narrator was more pleasant to listen to, I found myself wanting to fall asleep (that despite the story only being little over an hour of listening time) and having trouble to stay focused. Maybe the audiobook format just isn’t for me. I think I’ll try a few other audiobooks before settling with that opinion (full cast audiobooks sound cool for example, or a book that doesn’t require as much focus as an older story such as this one), but that seems to be the way I’m leaning. The ending also fell quite flat for me - where Lord Arthur Savile’s crime had a wry, funny end-note, this one felt a bit too sombre and romance-heavy for me. I wanted a last, humourous twist, but alas, nothing of the sort.
Even though this was a bit of a miss, I really do want to read more by Oscar Wilde - his writing style really vibes with me.

#fortnightfrights "book written before 1960"
Dang I really liked this. Funny, endearing, clever. Further cements my love for Wilde.

Listened to this on audio, mostly while falling asleep at night. It was funny—not what I expected—but maybe a little creepy at the end? Not good creepy, but like old-fashioned ideals that used to be romantic but today are just kind of creepy...I think. Don’t quote me on that—I’d have to go back and listen to it again while fully awake. If you’re looking for a quick read/listen and some old-fashioned horror, go ahead and pick this up.
Delightful read, respectably for fans of parody and Victorian ghost stories

This book was not at all what I expected, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lighthearted, fun, silly, and playful, and not scary at all except a little bit at the end.
