not even the best redemption arc ever written could make me like Damon Torrance. I tolerated this book. I hoped that I would end up liking Damon by the end. But I just don’t.

3.2/5 ☆
i’m gonna be completely honest (which i always am), i was bored because we already knew this story. i mean, damon’s history. why he is the way he is. i was so ready for the “OMG that’s why he’s a psycho” but it’s the same story we learned from banks’ pov in hideaway

Holy fuck.
Damon's book.
DAMON’S. FUCKING. BOOK.

I wasn’t ready, and I wasn’t emotionally prepared. I thought I could handle it, but baby, I could NOT.

First of all— Winter?? Girl. WELCOME to my "I hate this FMC" shelf.

Okaaay, I take back the words about Damon from the first parts🫣 he can be cute. When he wants. But there are some reasons why he is cruel…and it was so disgusting to read… and after one plot twist maybe less, but still😳
But Winter?🤔 I don't know why, but she's been the most annoying to me out of all the girls so far🙄 I don't know, all her thoughts, actions… well she could be a little smarter… oh well those moments when she tried to "see" colors - I really liked those parts👌
Of course, some of the plot twist explanations - really seemed illogical😅 where did I roll my eyes🙄
But overall the story - I liked it. It got me involved. It twisted my mind quite a bit.

And now there's a moment when in the first part I liked both main characters, Banks in the second, and now Damon. So I hope that in the last part I'll like both again😁 Will - I have high hopes for him!

P.s.: cool fact that I met characters from Punk! And then it turned out that I already knew Horsemans, because they "ghosted" there too!🤩

✨ “Because pain in the body quiets the pain in the head. It feels good, like a kill switch for your brain.”
Kill Switch by Penelope Douglas is the third book in the Devil’s Night series, this time focusing on Damon and Winter. Three years after Winter’s testimony sends Damon to prison, he’s back and prison hasn’t changed him, only sharpened his hunger for revenge. His sights are set not only on Winter, but everything tied to her.
Winter is a complete badass. Her resilience in navigating life after a childhood tragedy and her refusal to back down from Damon prove her strength over and over again. Damon, already established as morally black in the earlier books, gets a raw backstory here that’s heartbreaking and helps explain why he is the way he is. The fact that Douglas made me change my opinion about him completely is proof of masterful character writing.
The usual crew: Rika, Michael, Kai, Banks, Will, and Alex—return, and while some get more page time than others, their development deepens the overall story.
Tropes you’ll find:
  • Dark romance
  • Forced proximity
  • Secret identity / hidden love
  • Found family
Told in dual POV and moving between past and present, the structure kept me hooked and guessing. The last 20% was a roller coaster of twists, reveals, and gut-punch emotions. This is a heavy, emotional read that digs into trauma, redemption, and the search for belonging, so please check trigger warnings before diving in.
What worked: Character development and connection. I felt deeply for Winter and Damon. I literally found myself talking out loud ,"you better not hurt her!” during certain chapters.
What didn’t work as well: One subplot wrapped up too quickly and was barely touched again, and I struggled to follow a chase scene. (That might just be me reading too fast because my anxiety was spiking!)
This book is top tier for me. I had a feeling Damon’s story would hit the hardest given how dark and heartbreaking his arc has always been, and it absolutely did not disappoint.

Okay just a small gripe- but I think the resolution between Winter and Damon was TOO quick. Especially with how many competing emotions they are experiencing. It felt like forgiveness happened and then that was that. With random bouts of anger in between. Which, understandable absolutely, but I guess it felt rushed or misplaced because I was expecting more of a conversation around it all? Idk

This was a really fucked up situation and I wish there had been a bit more to them figuring their shit out. I fear the action at the end overshadowed what could have been a really beautiful healing process for them and instead became a situation where the threat of death just had them shoving the past aside because *love*, getting upset about it later, but then not really addressing it fully?

Also… DID DAMON NEVER SAY I LOVE YOU EVEN AS THEY ARE EXPECTING A BABY or did I completely miss that???
