I struggled with this one. Murder doesn’t happen until 85%. It’s focused on the idea of a suspected murder that may or may not have occurred. It has a big focus on psychology and if a woman is sane or not. It didn’t age the most gracefully and had a lot of descriptors of women with less markup or non traditional clothes being frumpy in a slightly sexist tone.

Plot: Hercule Poirot does a lot of sitting in his chair thinking about “the third girl”, a woman who is the third person to live in a flat with two others.

Overall Rating: 3.5/5. I liked the Poirot and extra time with Ms Oliver. I did get the twist correct at the end and I correctly identified the red herring. A bit too predictable for me.

TW: death, sexism, suicide

I enjoyed this one more than I have many of Christie's later mysteries. The story is silly, of course, but it's lively and kept me guessing with its many red herrings. I love having Mrs. Oliver and Poirot team up again, and it's also pleasant to see Poirot's vulnerable side (and his matchmaker side). I admire Christie's ability to just stop a book at the end, much as I admire people who can end a phone call without a long goodbye.

A pretty standard Poirot, though made more amusing by the fact that he gets involved because he's insulted that a sweet young thing says he is too old to help her. He, of course, is not. I'd give this one an extra half-star, if I could, for the last page.
