Although the audiobook was enjoyable and this story was pretty creepy in places, I want to revisit it in a physical copy to see if I like it more once I've already read it. Because from what I can say now is I feel like I'd love it upon reread.

There is beautiful language, very sensual imagery and alluring characters. I felt enraged and genuinely terrified at moments albeit I am not a true crime or horror book reader and probably have quite a low tolerance. This book follows a young socialite from Mexico City on a journey to check in on her cousin, a journey that very quickly ascended from strange to horrifying and becomes a rescue mission. There is a romance element as well and the horror feels rooted in the real horror of patriarchy, colonialism and white supremacy. The sentient mushrooms and extension of life along with cannibalism and mind control is very well done. I especially loved and hated realizing Noemis nightmares were actually memories.

Really enjoyed the lead up to the big reveal, the suspense was spot on. The ending felt rushed but it was still satisfying enough!

listen okay the only downside to this for me was the romance. it starts as more of an atmospheric gothic horror and evolves slowly into a full-on you-should-look-up-content-warnings horror. the integration of real-life horrifying things, e.g. eugenics, and slightly more fantastical elements was just wonderful. the detailed descriptions of the house and graveyard walk the line between gothic beauty and horror SO nicely. i have read 17 horror novels in 2020 so far and this is one of my favourites. i think if you go into this looking for a thriller or romance you won’t like it as much, but the horror elements were so good imo and the pacing was totally fine I think. (saw some reviews mentioning a slow buildup, i didn’t mind it at all. i thought it really added to the atmospheric elements.)
