Outlander

Diana Gabaldon

I was enjoying this book very much for the first half, but it lost me in the second. The rapes, the wife beating, the villian suddenly being gay,..these things just didn’t work for me. Maybe I’m just reading this with current sensibilities but I don’t think they were handled well.

Also, it’s funny that the author insists that this isn’t a romance, since it could have been about 100 pages shorter if she cut out some of the sex scenes. I enjoy romance, but some of it just felt gratuitous.

Outlander has given me so much to think about. The creativity that Diana conspired is truly awe-inspiring. The way she writes brought up true emotions for me, and I found myself with an anxious heart, or I’m tears of both sadness and happiness. This was an amazing story to read and I’m so excited to read the rest of this series!

This book was so good!!! If you like Scottish men and time travel romances than this the book for you!

I loved the writing and I was interested and invested the whole time and now looking forward to watching the first season to see how the character match up to my image of them.  But there were some things I just couldn’t get past.
1. When Claire ran off in the woods shortly after they were attacked and almost killed in the woods by deserters.  Plus she wasn’t even going to say goodbye. She was just going to leave Jamie and never know if he was ok on his dangerous mission and never give him any answers. That was so dumb and I couldn’t get passed it. Then when Jamie whipped her for it, it completely changed my opinion of Jamie. I never forgave him the rest of the book for that. Big no for me! 2. The scene where she was saying no to rough sex and it was hurting her and he wouldn’t stop. That was flat out rape and it was just brushed over because eventually she started liking it rough. Boooo.  3.  When Jamie was raped by Randall, in my mind Randall won. He got what he wanted and totally destroyed Jamie and I don’t even care that he supposedly died. Ruined the ending for me.  4. The unnecessary detailed description of the rape and torture. Too graphic and completely off putting. 5.  Claire reenacting his trauma and even cutting him and smearing the blood and that was supposed to cure his fever? And cure his inability to be with her? Completely unbelievable and ridiculous. The whole last quarter of the book took such a dark turn and I don’t think I can continue reading the series now.

Please take review with grain of salt as I did not finish it. I thought this book would be for me but it was not working for me. I got to 600 pages and couldn’t deal with reading another 800. Such a strong start but mediocre sex scenes and the writing quality diminished.
