This was a hard book to listen to, and I can see why it is frequently banned or challenged. There are many tough topics addressed in this book. However, I can also see why it is an important book, because of those tough topics and what it can teach teens and adults today. This is not a book you would give a child, but I do think it's appropriate for high school.

The way Toni Morrison words things; I wish she could write my obituary.

I get why it won a Pulitzer and also I hated it.

Reading this book was a challenge. I lack the necessary background information about what life was like for the Black community in the 1940s or 1960s, being that I am not American nor have I studied American history..
Nonetheless, what I have managed to gather is that the book is attempting to showcase the devastating effect of being Black in a predominantly white country; of trying to erase anything black or African in order to appease the white coloniser, and still being discriminated against. Of how blacks treat those they deem to be inferior to them because of their physical appearance, and that they will not pity a child
that was raped by her father because she’s ugly, a child who is twelve, who was driven to insanity.
