For this installment of the Underworld Kings, we are brought back into The Society, the world we are introduced to in The Society Trilogy. This was such an incredibly dark and angsty read and I loved every minute of it. Alessio has a brutal job of extracting information from "clients" using whatever means are necessary. He is also in need of a nanny for Nino, and looking to find someone outside of The Society. Natalia seems perfect for this role- she seems to not be afraid of Alessio, has stellar qualifications, but unbeknownst to him, a hidden agenda. Both Alessio and Natalia are intriguing characters. Both have hidden depths, and both have an attraction to the other that they try to fight, but can't win against in the end. This was incredibly heavy, dealing with some very depressing and brutal topics, but it's also incredibly steamy. Reading about not only how Alessio and Natalia evolve, but also how they are with Nino just sucks you in - I didn't want to put this book this book down once I started. I loved this decadent, dark and emotional romance!

Alessio Scarcello is a complete recluse. They call him The Debt Collector. He always gets answers from people and to whomever needs them one way or the other.
Alessio has a child under his care. He does what he can to run a tight ship and keep the child, Nino, safe as possible. But Alessio is not necessarily a nurturing person. He is seeking a nanny who can care for Nino the way that he deserves to be treated.

We meet Natalia. She doesn’t speak. Or rather can’t due a traumatic accident. So she uses a phone app to talk for her. She may not be able to use her voice but she is sassy, honest, upfront, and definitely uses the phone app to speak her mind and is the only person that genuinely stands up for this little boy Nino.

“I don’t need a wife and a nanny. I simply need someone to keep Nino on track in the ways I cannot. Someone who can provide the qualities I lack and the empathy to maintain his humanity.”

This was such a unique book because it did not go the way that I thought it was going to go. It definitely kept me engaged in reading the book. There are definitely plot twists I did not see coming. Alessio can tell that Natalia has gone through some stuff in her life with all the scars she’s got on her body, the squeaky clean background check doesn’t feel right to him. But he’s definitely intrigued by her mothering instincts to Nino and how quickly Nino warmed up to her. And really preferred Natalia over Alessio.

We do find out right off the bat that Nino is not Alessio’s biological son. So who is?
What happened to Natalia that she can’t speak and has scars covering her throat and wrists? Why does she sleep with shoes on?
The people surrounding Alessio are sketchy as hell. Natalia is definitely holding a shit load of shocking secrets.

This was my first book from this author and it definitely will not be my last. I absolutely loved it

This book is A. Zavarelli at her best. Her addition to the Underworld Kings is just what the doctor ordered. We get all the dark deliciousness that we all have grown to crave from her writing. The characters are well written along with all the roller coaster of emotions. This twists and turns will have you on the edge of your seat, and you will be craving more.

It’s been a minute since I read something from this author. Now I remember why. This was some dark gloomy shit. But I appreciated that all the twists and turns where not stereotypical or predictable. Our H/h are both survivors of some serious fucked up trauma, but I guess it’s nice they found each other?

Enjoyed it for what it is, but I feel like I need to go read something light and fluffy to cleanse my soul.

I loved it!

A bit slow burn in the start but this book managed to keep me on the edge of my seat through out.
I really enjoyed it, and Ms. Zavarelli has once again shown me her wonderful talent!

The end of the epilogue teases us with what I can only assume is another book in this universe. One I really also need to read!

5 super stars.

the plot twist was good, but then the book got boring again

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Reread)

Back in the IVI world and this one did not disappoint!

Even though the reveal came in later I figured it out pretty early on when she first interacted with Nino. The severity of what had happened to her was a huge shock though. Enzo is an absolute trash bag of a human being and I am satisfied with his ending.

Alessio and Natalia's chemistry was just one for the ages. I love the fact he was a virgin and his reasoning might not make sense to some people but it made sense to me. He was linking intimacy and relationships with the worst moment of his life. I don't blame him for being closed off and not pursuing anybody. The scene where he goes to the Cat house after meeting the H didn't bother me either since nothing truly happened and it's all he knows on how to handle his lust.

Also despite the absolute horror of a job - she was his mirror (because of what she gone through of course and not because she was born a psycho lol).

Gwen was disturbing and that is me being kind. She was deranged, manipulative and a psychopath. She knew ALL the horror things her son did: the rapes, the abuse, the part he played in raping his sister-in-law and killing his brother and YET she did the most disgusting thing and kept her mouth shut and made sure he lived in bliss in prison (let's not even open the can of worms when it was revealed how she kept the guards happy).

Overall I really enjoyed this book. I love the IVI Society and all the books surrounding it. I believe this was the only one left until we get Abella and Angelo's story. I can't wait for it to come out and I know it's going to be good because I loved the end scene where they are the godmother and godfather of the new baby and both had no idea and Natalia doesn't even know what's going on.

meh

It just took too long for him to start treating her like a human. I didn’t get enough time after he realized he loves her the last time. I say last time because he has a few epiphany’s where he realizes his feelings but even after all those he still didn’t wise up. *She almost died I can’t live without her. Just kidding get her away from me. Repeat x 3.* I need me a hero who can show his love. Idk. Maybe my expectations were too high. This book was recommended in a JP book Facebook group and I just didn’t feel it. Didn’t like the H.
