While I was left thinking about Olive, I couldn't care less about William. Something about mediocre problematic men is just not compelling.

It was so good to reconnect with Lucy Barton. Elizabeth Strout has a great way of making a character come to life - with a quiet easy to read style that also makes you think and relate.

lucy barton is my new best friend, she absolutely gets me

this was such an incredibly charming book
and sooo bingeable, i absolutely adored elizabeth's writing style, it's perfect, it's all i have ever wanted.

i also really enjoyed that this is a book i could turn my brain off with, it was entertaining and beautiful at the same time.

"this is the way of life: the many things we do not know until it's too late"

"i am not invisible no matter how deeply i feel that i am"

Fans of Lucy Barton (two prior works by ES, My Name is Lucy Barton and Anything is Possible, feature this complex character) will welcome her return. She’s now in her 60s, divorced from William, remarried (and widowed) and her daughters are grown. This is really a book of observations of life, love, longing, belonging, loneliness, hopes, dreams and the stories we tell ourselves in our heads. It’s also about how our pasts shape and haunt us, despite our best intentions. It sort of goes nowhere and everywhere all at once. If you like the style of the author, this book will not disappoint. My favorite of hers is probably Olive Kitteridge. Read this book in a day. No chapters, which makes it hard to know when to take a break!
