The Color Purple was marvelous. Truly a modern, American classic. The story of Celie is difficult and beautiful. Her resilience is so deeply felt and her growth inspiring. I loved this book.

Additionally, the new movie is great, and I would highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book and its powerful themes! It offers a lot of insight that the movies don’t.

Man this book was great. My friend recommended it to me saying ‘it’s mandatory reading for white people’ but it’s so much more than that. It’s such an intersectional book and anyone would be a better person for having read it. The love the characters have for each other is palpable.
‘But when you talk bout love I don’t have to guess. I have love and I have been love.’

Writing: powerful. Evocative of the South and Africa.
Plot/characters: you are drawn to the characters. You are pulled into their lives and issues. You can’t help but feel for them.
Profundity: yes, it’s about race. It’s an embarrassment of a time if you’re white. But it’s also about God and how God fits into our life. That’s what sticks most for me.

The only complaint I have is how long it took me to read this.  I see why this book won the Pulitzer and the National Book Award.
