If you have the opportunity to read this all in one weekend I highly recommend. This story is a masterpiece. Thanks to the author for sharing, this is on my list of all time faves. Wow.
This broke my heart into so many pieces. It was so wonderfully written, I needed a hug after it.
All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr, was exquisitely written. It follows the lives of two people, Marie-Laure and Werner, from the age of five to near adulthood. Taking place in Saint-Malo, France, and a dreary orphanage in Germany, the book contains a unique view of World War II from the eyes of a civilian and Hitler Youth. The description was so artfully done that the reader can feel blindness as acutely as Marie-Laure, and can feel wonder and curiosity as strongly as Werner. Although in general we cannot find any empathy for those people who fought on the Nazi side, through the pages of this book we can begin to understand that the training begins when the kids are not old enough to understand what is going on and they are not given the option of leaving. As the book progresses, Marie-Laure lives a quiet life in hiding with her uncle Etienne, and she begins to discover more about herself but also about the war, and the small, defiant victories she scores against the Nazis go unnoticed but are fiercely important and influential in unexpected and beautiful ways. Anyone who wants to gain perspective and insight on the nature of people under pressure should read this outstanding book.

Didn’t really care what happens.
That felt like a bit of a slog in the end. In audio form, I sometimes had a hard time keeping track of the perspectives and timelines. Since we were following multiple time periods at once, none of the "twists" felt very surprising or satisfying, I just knew they were coming. The writing style and character voices were very engaging for the most part!
