A totally different take on "how we used to live" in the style of a Lonely Planet style guide. Full of facts yet very readable, there's always something new that you learn when you thought history lessons had told you everything.

Very informative and fun. Some chapters I felt I couldn’t put down and some chapters were very slow.

I would give this a 3.5, but that's not possible. An interesting and fun read! Only reason I give this a lower score is the fact that I did not enjoy this AS much as many other books I've read lately that have been hard to put down. Maybe this one's just different.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Mortimer's approach is that if you were a time traveler visiting the past, your concerns would be the day-to-day sorts of things: what should I wear, where will I sleep, and so forth. He even talks a bit about cultural relativism - that it's unfair of us to apply modern standards - say, for hygiene - to another era in which they did not even understand germ theory. Highly recommended - I wish there were 12 more of these.
