This was a one star read for me. But I did give the benefit of the doubt and an extra star, because maybe I just don't understand this type of horror?
I didn't enjoy any of the characters, except the dog. The plot was a little bit of a mess. I was all on board for a scary under the ocean horror. But then it just got, weird? The info dumping at the end was not my favorite and took away from everything the author tried to do.
There were more flashbacks than anything else and they were so boring.
But like I said. Maybe this just wasn't the book for me. I know a lot of people love it. If you're going to read it, please look up trigger warnings. I did not and it ruined it for me.

The Deep by Nick Cutter
Book: 3/52
Favourite Quote: “What shambled forth was unspeakable”
This was more like 3.5 stars, but I’ve rounded it up to 4 because I certainly wasn’t bored.
I really do not know how to feel about The Deep. Nick Cutter’s books (based on the two I’ve read so far) are kind of like the novel equivalent of the Until Dawn/Dark Pictures Anthology video game series. They are cliched and bombastic and have that annoying internal monologue thing going on, but I can’t help but love it. Although they push horror cliches further than these games, this book took a really odd turn and did something I didn’t expect and I’m not sure if I wanted that.
Things I liked:
- The setting!!! Any underwater setting is so claustrophobic and immediately terrifies me
- The body horror was gross which was perfect, and did a lot of stuff I hadn’t seen before. It was cleverly written as well, although it didn’t make me physically cringe like others have
- The pandemic that serves as the backdrop for the novel was really different and it’s a shame that there isn’t an entire book about it
What I didn’t like:
- The ending? Sure, it was different, but it just let the entire story down. No spoilers here but I would’ve preferred to see it going in a different direction, maybe something more like the movie The Descent
- The number of ANNOYING FLASHBACKS!!! I felt like they didn’t serve a purpose and just added padding to a character that I wasn’t interested in in the slightest
All negativity aside, I certainly wasn’t bored. I devoured over half of this book in a single sitting and the tension was held incredibly well. However, the ending let me down from what I was hoping would be a fun, gross and terrifying time down in the depths of the oceans.

Definitely some of the best horror, I felt my skin crawl at some of the descriptions and I loved every second of it. It's so hard to find a horror book that actually creeps me out

Cutter’s newest book is nightmare fuel. I didn’t want to read it at night while my fiancé was asleep, it was that scary!
Cutter’s writing is so dark and tactile, you really FEEL the things that are happening to his main character. He’s great at putting you in a scene. I am also fascinated by deep sea exploration and loved this deep descent into madness and terror.
But while this book was terrifying, revolting and skin crawlingly disturbing, I left feeling a little disappointed with the overall storyline (I LOVED “the troop” by the way). It just ended up being a little more basic than I was hoping?
Still, I’m very glad I read it and the imagery is so dark and disturbing I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time.
