A chilling account of a man’s attempt to keep his grip on sanity. The events of this book are truly harrowing.
On a side note, this book broke my heart on p. 346. Why must all good dogs die?

It started to bore me. The descriptions of what was going on was no longer interesting to me

My mother always said that if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all.
However, the body horror descriptions were good.

It started out okay and started to get good… but there was just way too much going on for any one theme to be developed meaningfully. Grief and memory loss and child sexual abuse and child loss and childhood nightmares and PTSD and sociopathy and insanity. At the end I was reminded that going in, this was about fatherhood, sort of, but the story lacks a root in parenthood fears, so the childhood imagery and main character’s regrets as a father fall flatter and flatter with every invocation.
The Deep succeeds in developing a compelling setting for horror and has a few genuine scares, but tries way too hard to be speculative and psychological while failing to genuinely understand those elements. Everything from the language to the dialogue to the horror tropes felt desperate, absolutely desperate, to be Stephen King. I noticed dozens of stylistic mimics of King, so while the plot and concept were unique, the language felt manufactured. The horror was set up and delivered and especially the way the characters were characterized was formulaic. One thing I noticed was Cutter’s recycling of certain adjectives—feathered, cantilevered, and a few others. It gave me the impression he has a limited supply of language and the metaphors he is serving are stale
