Ok, so. I've been meaning to read a Nick Cutter book, and this one really seemed interesting to me. I think I'm really into 'Sea Horror'. The premise was really interesting, especially the Gets. I would have loved if they explored that a little more, but I get why they didn't. This is also one of the only books that actually creeped me out/got me a bit spooked. The descriptions are top notch, it really makes you feel like you're there, under the sea with these things. My mind is all jumbled with this book, to be honest. There is so much happening, and by the end of it, you do feel a little exhausted just by the whole ordeal. So, I'm not even sure the best way to review it. The end was also a little funny to me. No spoilers, the ending doesn't just come out of nowhere, but it still had me feeling like "I really didn't expect this to be the conclusion".
This review is so jumbled, but that's the best way I can put how it makes you feel. So much happening in such a small amount of time, you don't have time to catch your breath or take a break.

first of all, i’ve always hated the ocean and this just confirms my fear of never knowing what is under there. i loved the horror aspect of this book and i could easily understand some things that happened. but i wish there was clarity on whether this was all of the people in the trieste going insane??? or where the “figmen” real? i don’t want to complain too much because i feel like not really knowing made the book more alluring.
the ending was really good, but also not??? idk how to explain it. i like the idea of making your own ending. did the fig-men rise? who knows. were they even real? who knows. i ideally like that kind of thing. but, when the book is decently long and has an intriguing story line, i’d kind of prefer to know the end.

This book was well on its way to being a five-star masterpiece of horror. The atmosphere, the gore, the tension, the mystery. All coming together to make a perfectly poisonous stew. And then.... The ending. As a long-time fan of horror, it's not like I'm surprised to read another story where the ending soured an otherwise perfectly good book. My main gripe lies with the fact that there's somehow this mysterious society of Eldritch beings that has been following Luke and his family for generations and that they are responsible for everything awful that has happened in Luke's life. That he was some sort of experiment. Another smaller but not less significant gripe is how Clayton's character turned out. Robbed of any nuance. He's evil. He's aloof. He's damaged. But also he's a murderer and that's not okay even though he did murder his mother who was sexually abusing him. But he didn't do for good reasons?????
