The Deep

one of the most sickening, mind-melting, and utterly hopeless books ive ever read. The Deep feels like this rot that keeps unfurling and corrupting more and more until the words you are reading feel nothing like the beginning. there are moments where i genuinely couldnt believe i was still reading the same book i started with.

i dont particularly feel like i could even capture this novel’s madness in a way that would do it justice. all i can say is that its a horrible, horrible book. it is probably the bleakest thing ive ever read. it is violent, and cruel, and depressing. there is genuinely an endless amount of sickening visuals and horrible revelations, with little levity to back it up. that being said, it’s also written incredibly well - not super shocking considering how good The Troop was. every character is captivating, and i had to force myself to stop reading at points because its just so good.

if you can stomach it, there’s not much like it. probably one of, if not, my favorite thing ive ever read.

The Deep started off really strong for me - creepy imagery, the isolation of the ocean, the bizarre unknown - and it maintained the intensity up until about 70% of the way through where to be honest it kind of lost me. There was a lot of “ooo who knows if this is real” that by the time we got to the climax, I was a bit mentally checked out and the fates of the characters didn’t affect me as much as I feel they could have. Still a decent read though!

Although I did really enjoy this, I think I would have enjoyed it more had I been more in the mood for it. I'll definitely revisiting at some point. I really loved the atmosphere. I adore claustrophobic horror like this and I think underwater settings are so fun. They're one of my favorites. With all that being said, while reading, it felt like some parts just dragged on. And I really think that's just because I wanted to be done reading it and I didn't read it as quickly as I'd expected. I absolutely loved the ending though. This truly was a really fun, claustrophobic read.
