4.5 stars would have been five if it wasn't for the ending
I haven't read in a little under a year other than my mom's work. So when I started reading this to sooth my craving for yaoi I didn't expect to get far before something demanded my attention and my kindle once again got lost in with the other books.
Two days later (and much scrambling to finish homework) I finish the book craving more!
This review will contain spoilers I will put the big one in spoiler tags but little ones are left alone... You have been warned!
Will finish after school Pep rally go team!

Apparently books can keep me from doing my homework but not reviews.... *facepalm* I will try to remember all of what I wanted to say in this review

Brute
I wanted a light, fluffy read and this was on sale and looked like exactly the thing I was looking for.
It started off with a lot of potential. Brute was very likeable as a main character. The premise was really interesting and allowed the scope for a nice romance to develop between the two main leads. Gray was also very likeable, although felt a little unrealistic at times. It was never fully clear to me how he managed to survive, living for a decade like an animal and seemingly not really having anything to sustain him or give a will to live, no family, no loved ones, no hopes or aspirations.
The set up was going strong, however, around mid-way it really tapered off for me. I felt like it never managed to take off. The build up was good, but then when the whole falling in love bit was done the rest of the novel failed to keep my interest. I just didn't feel there was enough tension in the book, everything got resolved too quickly and everything just turned out really peachy, really quickly. Considering we started off with two people in a very dark place, both both physically and emotionally maimed, it felt too easy when they suddenly got their HEA without much discernible effort.

Spoiler
That episode with the guard catching up with them read a bit like a caricature. Brute wasn't really so stupid as to believe they would take him instead - was he? And then boom, in the blinck on an eye, he saves someone's life and it's all sorted.
Hands down one of the best m/m love story ever, I cried several times at the romantic moments no kidding,
okay, look, if you're looking for a quick m/m romance read, this is a good option. world-building is there, characters are likeable, plot is fine. i had a good read, and will definitely be checking out her other works!
“Don’t you d-dare say you’re ugly or stupid or w-worthless. Don’t you dare! Y-you’re a giant because an ordinary man’s body is t-too small for what you are.”
Have you ever read a book that consumed your body and soul, that you found yourself up at 3 am trying to finish it? This standalone fantasy romance book follows Brute. He’s insanely tall, a giant among men and very ugly. His father was a murdered thief and his mother committed suicide. With his family's reputation and his unusual features, he is mistreated, abused and constantly told of how worthless he is. Reading him suffer at the hands of other people was so painful. Reading him believe all those awful words was worse.
An opportunity gets him away from his life and into the palace where he is given a comfortable life with the job of looking after one of the prisoners in the Brown Tower. The man has been convicted as a witch and as a traitor and is living as a shell of a man, experiencing haunting nightmares of the future. This man is Gray Leynham. Brute offers a simple kindness to the broken man and this kindness, simple human decency, is strange to him. When asked why, Brute answers:
“I don’t know. It doesn’t… it doesn’t cost me anything to do these things, does it? And I’ve never really had the chance before to—well, I don’t know.”
This is a story about love, about friendship, about forgiveness. It’s about learning your worth and recognizing that no matter your physical appearances or mistakes you’ve made in the past, you deserve respect, you deserve kindness, you deserve love.

Oh, this one was a special story, no doubt!
Fantasy, adorable and loveable characters, lovely setting and love, love, love.
There is something incredibly special in a character who is treated like a monster his whole life but remains gentle and caring inside. Brute was the sweetest giant of a man ever. His early years, how people treated him just because of his looks was heartbreaking. But he remained this person with tbe biggest heart and eagerness to do good and learn!
When he was appointed as the guardian to a prisoner who was treated like dirt it was inevitable that he cared for him better than anybody before him.
And Gray, oh how he suffered for a foolish mistake!
The story was a strong love story between a prisoner and his jailer and focused mostly on the characters and the relationship develolment! It was utterly beautiful!
All in all, I expected more angst and drama and excitment as an outcome but the story was pretty chill the whole time! I think the author could have inhanced some pivot points with a little more introspection and angst.
But it was still a very enjoyable and sweet read and I highly suggest it!

Brute has spent most of his life alone. Most people find him frightening due to his height and his background. But when he risks his life to save the life of the prince, he is rewarded with a new job in the palace and a total change in his station. His new job is a mysterious one, however. He is tasked with guarding a single prisoner, Gray Leynham. Rumor has it that Gray, who is blind and can barely speak due to a severe stutter, is a powerful witch and traitor to the kingdom. Gray is plagued by terrible nightmares--nightmares that Brute learns have a tendency to come true. As Brute learns more about Gray from the man himself, however, he finds out the truth of Gray's fate. And he also begins to understand that life does not necessarily need to be defined by what people expect of you and sometimes it is in doing the unexpected that one gets the chance to truly live.
There are some heavy moments here, and I personally wished that some things would have turned out better than they did. But there's also something refreshing about characters reaching points in there story that work, even if those points don't come together perfectly. Life is full of challenges, after all. Kim Fielding has a way of bringing characters to life on the page, and I certainly saw that same magic at work here as I was fixed to the book from pretty much the very beginning right on through to the end.
