I mean. It's a classic. Pro tip: the audio book is free with Spotify premium (there are a few narrations to choose from, actually!).
Before yesterday, I would have told you I read "The Wind in the Willows" in 2nd grade. I now think I just read the one story where Mr. Toad steals the horse from the barge woman, used a line from that story as a computer password for many years, and never read the rest of the book!
I found the stories pleasant, and I liked the contrasts between the different characters. Wish we could have seen more of that otter, though. Without the nostalgia of having read them as a kid, I basically just thought they were good and cosy tales. I have also learned, over the last year, that I don't really find "charming" British things to actually be very charming. When I read about a lower class youth tugging their forelock, it puts me in mind to depose a monarch.

I think I rounded up to a four. For the most part, had a good time with this! Delightfully British snark, cute lil animals, and surprisingly my favorite chapter was the Christmas one, because it was so warm and cozy.
I refused to do anything but read this aloud every time I opened it, so it took a little longer to read. I loved it! So strange and hilarious and beautifully written.

I have fond memories of riding the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland, yet never once read the source material of which inspired it. I was worried it would be difficult to read with it being written in 1908, but I was pleasantly surprised. I found the prose flowing and whimsical. It was delightfully fun. I enjoyed the use of anthropomorphic characters to explore human emotions (such as fear, nostalgia, awe, and wanderlust), while also commenting on class and society during the time which the story was written. Though classified as a "children's novel" it is very much a book that adults can enjoy as well.
