I loved the film, the book not so Much. The Way it was witten just didnt dó it for me. Sorry lorenzo

Sleepers has made it's way firmly into my favourite books of all time.

The writing style of this book is nothing special or out of the ordinary but I absolutely loved it. It flowed perfectly and was easy to read, meaning you could read for hours and hours and never notice.

The book is split into three main sections: the boys and their friendship in Hell's Kitchen, The WIlkinson's Home for Boys and the aftermath. The first section made me happy and smile at the image of the four boys running about Hell's Kitchen reading, playing and getting into mischief without a care in the world. Their friendship strong and their innocence and playful, happy nature evident. The second section highlighted the massive problems we had and still have within the criminal justice system, everybody knew what was going on but not a single soul did anything to stop it. Everybody turned a blind eye and got on with their own lives at the expense of others. Lorenzo is descriptive about the abuse the boys suffered at the hands of the guards but personally, I did not find it overwhelming or too distressing to read. It was raw and truthful. Unfortunately, things like this happen often and the truth is exactly what people needed to hear. The final part of the book was my favourite and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time! It was outstanding and I have nothing but admiration for the boys, the strength of their friendship and their determination is admirable.

I also liked how Lorenzo wrote about other characters we had met throughout the book to let us know what happened to them after they knew the boys!

I would recommend this book to anybody without a second thought! It is incredible and I can't wait to now watch the film!

This book made me tear up (no tears fell lol, I just teared up) countless times due to anger. I grieve for these boys as they were robbed for a bright future that they could’ve reached if it only weren’t for heartless losers. It didn’t made it to my ‘faves’ list as for me it lacks something, but there are few things that I consider good in this novel:

1. Their friendship - I crave for this kind of bond that they have — the one that stays through thick and thin, literally. It’s almost unbelievable to read it at some point, but in the back of my mind I believe that a bond as strong as this exists.

2. The banters - It made the story believable. Though hard to read most of the time, these kids’ banter made me smile at some point.

3. The courage for the author to retell this - The story is beyond harrowing and I, myself, wasn’t able to handle it well. I went through breaks and had to put down the book many times to collect myself as the passage becomes too brutal and descriptive. The novel embodies abuse, not in a romanticized way, and how it affects the victim. Lorenzo and his friends are living proof that abuse takes place and it needs to stop.

I’ve decided to read this because someone on the internet compared this to Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life (one of my favorite books). While it tackled almost the same issues and while I agree that Sleepers is a good novel, I don’t think Lorenzo’s writing style can be as beautiful and poignant as Hanya’s storytelling. I don’t agree with the comparison. I’ve read both books and I can’t see the similarities. It’s superficial and wrong to assume that these books are the same when in fact it just merely touched a similar issue.

T’was a hard novel to read through. Bittersweet, as some would describe. 3 stars.

Sleepers is a wonderful book that tells the story of a small group of friends whose lives are changed forever by what they intended to be a childhood prank. The boys start out as typical boys roaming the streets of Hell's Kitchen and getting into as much mischief as they possible can. However, one of the boys' pranks finally goes wrong and lands the boys in a Boys home for a years sentence. While the boys are imprisoned they are forced to endure horrible abuses by the guards which are incredibly hard to read. The boys' lives are, all in different ways, forever changed by this absolutely terrible occurences. The book then skips years forward to adulthood for these pranksters. The once inseparable boys have grown apart. One has become a lawyer, one a reporter, and two hitmen...and they all want the gaurds who still haunt them to pay for what they've done. The tale that follows is a riveting plan to claim back their lives from the men who stole their innocence.

The author of the book maintains that this is a memoir of his own youth. This claim is quite controversial. It seems pretty unbelievable to me that all of this could have happened and the author refuses to provide the evidence that would prove his claim...which is understandable considering that if it is true he and his friends would be in a lot more trouble than they ever got into as children. However, true or not, it is definately a great story and worth reading at least once.

Wow, what an amazing, horrible, delightful, page turner Sleepers is. Apparently the true story of four young friends who grew up in New York's Hells Kitchen area then spent a year in a children's "Home" for wayward boys being horribly abused. Years later, he and his friends found their tormentors and exacted their revenge. But it is much more than a story of abuse and revenge. It is really about true, unbreakable friendship.

An absolute must read for anyone who enjoys mysteries or coming of age stories.

though later I found out that most of the incidents in this book were actually fictitious, I still loved Carcaterra's Sleepers.
