It's no secret I adore Becky Albertalli and her books. Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda remains one of my favorite books of all time. Kate In Waiting is Becky's first solo book since Leah and I enjoyed it a lot! Just... not as much as I hoped? There were some things that irked me. Like Kate referencing others in her school as fuckboys and fuckgirls? I didn't get that and it kind of annoyed me? Especially how many times it was used. I also didn't relate to Kate herself that much.

But where Becky's writing shines is her ability to make characters feel real. Although I didn't relate to Kate, I also felt like she was a real person. Her borderline codependent friendship with Anderson was something I did really love, especially how much it grew and evolved. Kate herself grew as a character too, which I appreciated a lot.

I adored all the references and the romance that kept my heart beating faster than it should. And although this isn't my favorite book as her, I still enjoyed it immensely. I will forever be a fan of Becky and will read everything she writes without question. That will never change.

Kate in Waiting is about a girl named Kate (lol) who always shares crushes with her best friend Anderson. After their summer crush, Matt, ends up at their school everything goes off script as they make a deal to both go after him. Kate actually really likes Matt but the problem is, so does Anderson.

I had a better time listening to this than I did when I read the arc months ago but I still had some issues. Overall this book was really sweet and cute though. All the friends and family were so wholesome too. I loved the theater kid vibes and all the things about the show. It reminds me of my days in school when I was in choir!

But oh my god I just hate love triangles (squares?? whatever this was) and I hated Anderson. This is a thing I realized about myself while reading this but I've never really had crushes on people back in school. The strong desire to fall in love and be with my crush in between classes or across the cafeteria? Can't relate. So reading about this boy and girl and their constant thirst and crushes I was just like okay cool story.

Anderson was the worst character. I know we see things from Kate's POV and how he completely screws her over but he was just so annoying even before then. I know some things were out of his control but no I wanted to fight him and his friendship with Kate was obnoxious. For something that was most of this book, I didn't have a fun time there.

But I still liked this enough and I'm so glad Becky Albertalli wrote something on her own again and not with a certain other author she has worked with before that I do not like.
