3.5 stars. This was super cute, YA. Becky Albertalli’s writing and storytelling abilities are so consistently good. I had a hard time getting into this until about 150 pages in, but it may have just been me. Cute read, highly recommend.

Why’d I pick this read? I like this author’s other YA books (I.e. Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Leah on the Offbeat)

This is based on an ARC of the book. It was a cute story but one I feel I’ve read before. The book could’ve been served better of it was in dual perspective. I also have issues in books where characters just don’t talk to each other. Granted that would ruin the plot of a book, but this one seemed a bit hard to believe.

Oh my god. I didn't think Becky Albertalli could get better... but she did! Kate in Waiting was by far my favorite book she's ever written. It was so sweet and cute and relatable and hilarious and ughhhh everything. I literally cannot think of a thing I didn't like about it.

Kate and Anderson always have communal crushes. Every time one of them falls for a guy, the other is right there with them. It's normal... they swear. Well, Matt is the most recent victim. They met at a summer camp and Kate and Anderson were completely smitten. Now, this wouldn't have been a problem - its like any other crush - until Matt shows up at their school and Kate and Anderson become friends with him. Could this test their friendship more than anything ever has?

Seriously! Go read this book if you need to feel very good about life. And if you love musical theatre and want to see references. And if you've ever had a friend you could share anything with. And if... well you get the point.

I received an eARC courtesy of Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins Children's Book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Disclaimer: I was a pretty big theatre nerd in high school, so I might have some deep bias about this book.

I LOVED this book. I don't remember the last time that I have stayed up late reading a book because I simply had to finish it. It is very rare for me anymore. Rarer still: I would read this again.

I thought the character development, setting, themes, emotional range, dialogue and just about everything felt accurate and realistic. And it was frankly refreshing to just have a book with a happy ending-I needed a happy ending. I shall stop my comments here so I don't descend into spoilers.

Side Note (possible SPOILER warning-or an un-spoiler): I'm apparently becoming a bit of nervous while reading YA books. At the end, when Anderson and Kate get in the car together, I was totally expecting a car crash/death. I think the more 'harsh' YA authors have broken my spirit.

For Libraries: Yes-please buy it!

*Spoilers Ahead*

Its hard to rate this book because my opinions are so scattered on it. I would give it 2.5 if half stars were a thing.

First off, I think I would have had a lot more fun with this book if it had alternating perspectives between Matt, Noah, Kate and Andy rather than just being told from Kates POV. She was honestly kind of my least favorite character and I would have loved to actually see the development between Matt and Andy. I think there could have been such a cute coming out story here.

A lot of the first 70% of the book felt like filler. I get it, they both had a crush on the same guy, but it felt very redundant. Again, with multiple POVs it might have moved along faster. My main motivation for continuing was Noah.

Noah Kaplan. OH HOW I LOVE THIS CHARACTER. From the time he was introduced I was rooting for him and Kate over Kate and Matt and I'm so happy I got my ending with them. I think I would have been very annoyed if I didn't. I don't think words can describe how much I love this boy.

The last 30% of the book was really good! I loved the development of Noah and Kate - I think they should have had a greater focus earlier in the book. Maybe Kate struggling to choose between who she had a bigger crush on? I knew the chemistry was there, but Kate took FOREVER to find it. However, the ending of the book just cemented how much I love Noah. Hell, I even love Ryan and would love to have seen some of his and Noahs relationship. Again, multiple POVs would have made me so much more invested.

Also, the use of f-boys, f-force, fuckboys, and f-girls really started to get to me. Trust me I get it. I was that theatre kid in high school who hated the jocks, and I totally understand where they're all coming from but damn it was overused.

I do like the emphasis on friendship in this though. So many books, movies and tv shows now are centered on only the romantic plot, (which I'm a sucker for, let's be real), but the friendship element here was really cute.

Overall it was an enjoyable read. A little slow, but the ending picked up a lot. Also, I'm a sucker for some good theatre plots, I miss the world of performing SO MUCH and this lit a lil of that joy in me.

This is definitely fun and cute! I loved all the inter-relationships here. Kate was pretty clueless a lot of the time - which felt realistic, but was a teeny bit frustrating/annoying sometimes.
