Oh my God, this was so good. It was so beautiful, the descriptions of things made me feel like I was actually in the world, I also cried in the last chapters. My favorite character is probably Zhen, I think I kind of felt my own personality within him, and even with Xian. It was so funny, endearing, and heartbreaking...but I loved every second of it

The premise was very promising, however the pace of the book made it hard to truly immerse into the plot and intrigue. The relationships by extension didn’t feel earned due to the fast nature of the book. If you’re looking for a quick read and a light introduction to the concept of danmei, this might be for you.; experienced readers might want to skip to the next one.

I read this really quickly and it’s because the plot was so straightforward. I kind of wish we got more in depth interactions between Zhen and Xian but I still enjoyed it.

I was not aware of the myth of The White Snake, so this was a completely new story for me. Lee did a good job at interpreting the legend. I appreciated the queer love story and representation.
Zhen is a lovely character that you want to give lots of cuddles. Xian is complex and not always correct, but he learns.
Lee gave some idea on what palace life was like, though they did not dive into it too thoroughly. The world building could have been more elaborate, but it did what it needed, too. The only part of the writing that I had some trouble with was that the dialogue was very modern. It did not feel as if this was sent after the Tang dynasty because the characters spoke as they would today.
I listened to most of the book on audio as I read along the physical to help with pronunciation of words, and I enjoyed the narrators.
It was a quick and decent young adult read.
