This is a middling fantasy-romance YA novel. If that genre appeals to you, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy it. Many YA books tend to get bogged down in introspection—often self-absorbed and superficial. While this novel contains some of that, it is relatively well-managed and not overly distracting.
That said, the romance feels superficial, leaning more toward infatuation than the deep emotional connection the narrative seems to suggest. This is likely due to the main character being portrayed as overly perfect—endlessly kind and morally upright in ways that don’t always feel authentic. That idealized depiction contributes to the overall sense of shallowness, especially as challenges are resolved with little effort or consequence.
I don’t usually read YA and picked this up without realizing that’s what it was, drawn in by the unique setting and intriguing premise. In the end, I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. It was fine—just not quite for me.

This is a beautiful and emotional love story with some surprisingly dark moments. The plot is also layered with a fair amount of action that keeps it moving at an addictive pace.
At the heart of the story is the complicated and intense relationship between Prince Xian and Zhen. Their relationship hits some high highs and some deep lows as it builds to its emotional climax.
Along with the romance, my favorite part of the book was the friendship between Xian and Feng, his loyal bodyguard. There are also some other great side characters and another romantic relationship that is quite sweet.
If you like YA romances, especially if you enjoy soulmates or the fated mates trope, this is well worth a read. Though, maybe have some tissues nearby!

It’s a sweet lighthearted story with enough twists to keep guessing. I personally am a sucker for a lot of full circle romances where characters meet up again in the future and cross paths. Zhen honestly was my favorite character out of the two - both are very caring towards families and similar values but I felt zhen’s emotional views on forgiveness contrasting to Xian’s really helped that build up in the end.
I feel like the end of the story could have gone a different direction but I’m genuinely happy that it ended the way it did (I can’t take anymore sad books)

Cute retelling of the lore. Lots of missed opportunities to build tension especially with the antagonist.
