I really enjoyed this book, it was however a little bit jumpy at times and flew through things I wish they focused on a bit more. I liked the characters but Xian was very hotheaded and I feel like his character growth happened instantaneously. It is a YA book so I feel like it was great for that area but I just wanted a bit more from the characters.

Solid premise and plotting.  The writing was somewhat simplistic and straightforward and not very smooth, especially at the beginning.  There were a lot of well-researched historical details that were interesting but inserted into the story like glossary detours instead of either having a dedicated glossary or trusting the reader to look up terms themselves.  Despite that minor distraction, it was a sweet story and a quick read.
