This is a hard book to read. It deals with a lot of hard topics--the migrant crisis, inhumane treatment, trauma. The author adjusts this hard content for a younger audience through extended metaphor of cranes, which makes it more accessible to some but also could be hard for some students to follow the story because of all of the figurative language. I listened to the book which was sometimes off-putting because the adult narrator's child voice made her sound even younger than she was supposed to be in the book. I think it is a great book to put into the hands of mature reading 4th-6th graders or adults, because the content is incredibly important, but the interest outside of those two groups might be lower.

This free verse novel packs a lot of power within its covers. It manages to bring heart and humanity to the issues of immigration and deportation in the US by telling the story of one fourth grade girl and her family. This is such a personal story and one I would not hesitate to recommend to middle grade and adult readers. As a white woman who lives in the Midwest, this book really helped me have a more personal understanding of the real-life effects of immigration policy changes over the recent years. Besides being full of heart, this is also beautifully written, and the audiobook is incredibly well done.
