What I didn't like: The clickbait Buzzfeed-esque title, the author's overly-optimistic tone, and shallow examples of Big Data. Then again, it's a book for the masses; a primer on Big Data for those who need an introduction, or at least some convincing.
What I liked: The author at least attempts to explain the seriousness and power of Big Data, though he's light on meaningful observations. Despite his optimism, he uses a good portion of the book to explain the limitations and possible dangers of Big Data. It's not a bad book, but I would have appreciated a deeper dive.

Incredibly depressing in places, but some interesting insights into what people really think and how they expose that via their online activities.

Ok...this book could probably have been 50% shorter. He mentions at the end that most people won't make it all the way to end, they'll read the first bit to get the premise then stop. It kinda feels like he wrote it with that in mind. "Well that won't read this bit anyway. I can ramble." He also put forth, "You may be saying 'I don't need big data to tell me this...'" but then failed to consistently tell us why it mattered to have big data confirm what we already know. It's fine when you give me "This conclusion is obvious without big data but here's big data support," 2-3 times but after awhile it makes me question why this book is necessary.
However, I have found myself referring to this book on several occasions lately when in discussion with other adults about random topics. And the bits on racism are super interesting, saddening, and important.

This book challenges everything I thought was true. Does going to a top college actually matter? What can our demographics and Facebook likes tell businesses about who we are as consumers? What can people do with this information? Everyone should read this book. I'm still recovering.
