2019 Popsugar - A book with a plant in the title or on the cover

Ugh. This book started out so strong and I was prepared for an intense, thrilling ride. Sadly, I got a dull, plodding disappointment. The two lives that intersect at the beginning barely even come close to each other until the very end. And so much of the middle of the book (and by middle I mean everything except, really, the first and last chapters) does nothing to really add to the story. And then Boyle throws in an incredibly saccharine ending (literally in the last sentence). At least much of the writing is really good.

Ugh. I really tried with this book since it was recommended to me, but I never got on board. Most of the book was tedious and a complete slog to get through. Part three picked up the pace a bit but I didn't care about any of the characters, all of them were awful, and the ending left a lot to be desired.

I read this book in school in English class and I can still remember pupils calling this book "unreal" or "exaggerated". Well, I think exactly the opposite is the case. It tells a story of a whole generation of real people. People who left their family and their home in hope for a better life in a country where they have to hide, experience racism and unfair treatment. This is very real up until today and there is no denying in it.

There is a lot of foreshadowing, which results in moments in the book, where you just know what could be about to happen. Still, I enjoyed this book very much, although I did not want to read it at all in the beginning (I'm a student). Finishing this book you are just grateful for your life...
I LOVE the game Boyle plays with all the names in the book, it is hilarious, he know when to use what word, just amazing.

worst book that I was forced to read in highschool.
