A friend of mine told me I would "appreciate the writing itself if not the story" and that she was 99% sure I would like this book. 99% is pretty confident, so I decided to give it a shot besides the fact that I've liked nearly all the other books she's asked me to read. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss was fantastic; well chosen, Lisa. ;) I had not asked her what the story was about so I started with no notions of the story and by the end of the prologue I was sucked in and utterly distracted from the rest of my life's chores that needed doing. Left well pleased by the writing and intrigued by the story, I read till two or three in the morning most nights without realizing it had been that long. I'd start before bed and tell myself, "Just one chapter, then bed;" get to the end of the chapter and say, "Well, that one was short. Maybe just one more, then bed;" finish the next, "But I can't leave it there.... Just one more chapter, then I have to go to bed." It went on like that for days.

Rothfuss uses a framed narrative to tell his story, intertwining Kvothe's life-story and Kote's current life into one book. At 661 pages, it's a whopper novel, but the fully defined characters, clever plot events, completely developed magic system and world, as well as beautifully deep writing kept the story prevalent in my mind even when I had to put it down to attend several ceremonies. I would have liked to bring the book with me and keep reading through them, but, you know, bad form and all. :)

There were a few places that the editor didn't catch some capitalization that shouldn't have been there, but they were only mildly irking. Around page 550 I started to feel a little dragged out, but the end picked up my curiosity again right up to the end when I realized this was going to be eating at my thoughts until I can lay hands on the next volume. Rothfuss wrote these with no intention of them being stand alone and we only get the first third of Kvothe's life in the inner story and only three or four chapters (if squished together) of the outer story of Kote. The break from one day of story-telling to the next was an ingenious way to end this volume, smoothly and without seams--I'm impressed. The chapters dealing with the framing story make it clear that there's a lot more going on in these books than the telling of the framed story. Things are happening in the outside world just as rapidly as they're happening inside the story being told around the table.

Still only halfway through the book, I asked my sister, "What are your reading plans for this summer?" She told me a few novels she was hoping to read that she'd been hoping to read for years and kept putting off. I told her, "You really should check out The Name of the Wind. It's pretty amazing so far and I think you'd enjoy it a lot." She told me her husband had just finished it and was enthusiastic about it as well and that it was next on her list now she had two recommendations. (To be honest, I was a little bummed that I wasn't the first to tell her to read it, ha ha.) Fantasy-lovers are destined to love this book, and even those with a mild appreciation for fantasy would more than likely enjoy the read as well. My sister took two recommendations to decide to read it; I took one. I hope you will only take one and pick this up--libraries already have it if you don't want to buy it (I picked it up that way, but it's now on my birthday list--must have!).

Great fantasy book, and looking forward to the next in the series. This may not have the most original premises (magic/demons/swords/etc) it was well put together and an easy read as it was so well done.
