WOW! Sorry, but this was one of the worst books I've ever read. I had high hopes, read a lot of good reviews saying this was on the level of Lord of the Rings. I'm like, did we read the same book? This book started off going no where and ended up no where. It didn't even build up to be going anywhere! And yes, I did, with a lot of pain, finish the book. I'm a little old fashion and try to read a book to the end no matter how bad the book. I wish I had stoped reading about 1/2 way through.

Slight disclaimer before I start: I think that I have had this book on my shelves for about 10 years plus, so this is massively overdue! I am so thrilled that I managed to finish this book in 2020, particularly given that it is a HEFTY tome. And even more brilliantly in that it is a 5 star rating. This is the exact kind of fantasy that I am looking for - easy to read, but with a reasonably complex world/magic system, and incredible characters. Add in the fact that the book largely takes place in a school setting and I am dancing.

If I had one tiny complaint then it is in the fact that the main character follows the "brilliant/amazing at everything without even trying trope", but this is tempered really well by the mystery surrounding him, and the idea that he may become a morally grey character. We know this because the story is written as a retelling; Kvothe is telling his story to the chronicler, so you jump back in time and travel through his childhood, his time living on the streets, and then his time at the university. But overshadowing this is the present day Kvothe, and the sense of malice and dread that seems to be creeping up.

Overall this book was simply amazing, and I am really keen to continue on (although I am now joining the scores of people waiting for the final book!)

My main issue was Kvothe’s attitude and his supposed abiliti to read every situation and everyone’s minds.

Nice enough but lacked intelligent depth. Slightly derivative fantasy story but perhaps  that’s the point. Closer to cosy fantasy.

Wow... The hype, this lived up to and surpassed it. Great writing, fluid style, detailed realistic characters. It is heroic sword and sorcery fantasy at it's best. The ending was a little more abrupt than I'd hoped for, but the sequel has been recently published so I'm getting ready to put the earphones back in and get washed away to another shore.

[EDIT] After re-listening to this instant classic my love for Patrick Rothfuss deepens significantly. He has the gift of a true storyteller. I am instantly transported, and have been pushed deeper into the mystery with every telling.

Now for The Slow Regard of Silent Things.
