Katrina wants to move out of her home and get away from her cruel mother and live a life of her own. Until her mother tells her that Katrina is the next sacrifice to the Headless Horseman who will then continue protecting their town of Sleepy Hollow. Well, Katrina does NOT want to be the next sacrifice and with the help of her mentor Henry, tries to leave. Things don’t quite go as planned and Katrina happens to meet none other than the Headless Horseman who is NOT at all what she imagined. Together with his help, they are trying to save her town from an even bigger threat than they imagined.

I really loved this reimagining! It’s spooky and eerie, and dark. Katrina is an amazing character! She’s someone who has to learn she is valuable no matter what others have said about her. She’s grown in a household where they’ve treated her like she’s worthless. It’s heartbreaking, but she learns so much from Alexander and becomes this different person, confident in herself and her abilities.

I really liked the romance. It’s a bit rushed, and yet a slow burn, if that makes sense

Hollowed is a great Sleepy Hallow retelling and perfect for spooky season. The setting is around a place of magic which is a safe haven for magic people however it's not much as a safe haven due to the village practice of sacrificing their own. The story gave a creepy vibe with the fog, crows, and headless horseman. I found Alexander sweet trying to make sure she knows her worth. Katrina, although Is seem to struggle and the odds were against her, she has grown throughout the book. I love that this one is a touch HIM and
die.

Parts of this felt like it was written by a teenager. I finished it because the story was interesting but there were multiple times that I debated about dnf-ing this one.

Parts of this book are great but man certain parts are so lazy and/or predictable that it's hard to read. I get that Katrina was sheltered, but even a sheltered/naive person wouldn't have drank the damn tea. Also the slow burn romance is killing me. Just stop not talking and admit you like each other. It's like a 13 yr old's vision of relationships/feelings. At no point did this feel like an Adult book, every moment felt like a YA novel.

The beginning was a little slow, but those details are important later in the book.

I absolutely loved it and would read more if a second were ever released!

I did have to keep going back to the pronunciation guide, and eventually just made something up each time I came across certain words.

when i saw this book i was so excited, i really, really wanted to like it, but the main characters really made it difficult, you know?
at important points in the story, you can be sure that the characters will choose the stupidest option because their IQ plummets suddenly or because they suddenly got possessed by the spirit of a rebellious teenager

Another great add to your Fall TBR; I enjoyed this gothic retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Katrina is our FMC, born with a hearing disability and growing up in an emotionally and physically abusive household, she believes everything she's been told about the folklore of the town she's grown up in. Sleepy Hollow is a magically hidden town, kept away from humans, for the protection of those who live within the town not wanting to be exposed and risked to such events as the Salem Witch Trials. To ensure their safety, the town council agrees that each year a sacrifice must be made to the Headless Horseman, who demands such a price for their protection...

...Or does he?
Alexander is our MMC, and I loved him immediately. I was expecting more of a broody kinda guy, but instead we got a cinnamon roll, but with a slight edge of mystery to him. He not only believes in Katrina, but works to see her achieve her full potential. "You are valuable simply by existing. You burn with a fire brighter than the sun. Do not let anyone dim you."

Only one horse
Fake Marriage
'remove your hand from my wife, or I'll remove it for you'
Who did this to you?
long kept town secrets
Witches/magic
She fights back!

I had a lot of empathy for Katrina, how she grew up and was treated. I loved Henry, who was a safe and supportive 'found family' for Katrina. And even though she had lived her whole life believing she was of no value, and that her magic wasn't worth the time to train her in, she reached deep, refused to give up on herself, and with the guidance from Alexander learned she was so much more than she'd ever dreamed she could be.

There's a part in the first 40% where the creepy fog comes rolling in for the first time, with a name whispered, and the whole scene gave me chills! I was already hooked, but this moment sealed the deal for me.

Thank you Jessica for the arc!

The passing almost got me for a minute in the beginning of this book but I think it was just that it was all single dialogue because the character really had so few people in her life that gave a crap about her.

She’s giving to the horseman as a savant so many things happen and lies are undone.

This was a beautiful story and the writing was so eloquent it was almost like reading a classic but one that I actually enjoyed.

A fun take on the Legend of Sleepy Hollow mixed with magic. It was a bit more YA than I was expecting.
