How to Deceive a Duke told the story of Fiona, a strong and independent young woman in the 1800's who went against the norm. She stood out in the crowd and had an intelligence that, back then, was to remain hidden; when women were meant to plan parties and shop and stay in the background.

Fiona was very much so in the foreground trying to make an impression on society and improve the life of others as well as provide for herself.

This is a the second novel in a series, but can also be read as a stand alone.  I was first introduced to Samara Parish through a goodreads giveaway for her debut novel, How To Survive a Scandal, and have since fallen in love with the world she has created! I'm looking forward to the next story in the series!!

I've been waiting for this book. Edward and Fiona have this chemistry, that I really loved in the first book. But Edward kinda drove me crazy with his need to live scandal-free. So it was really interesting to get the back story of what happened and has kept them apart all these years.

Fiona McTavish finds herself in London. She's there to get a patent for her invention but things are not going as planned. And after being arrested at a protest, she has to turn to the man who broke her heart

Edward would do anything for his family. He's been working hard to restore their family name after all these years. of living in the shadow of the scandal his father left behind. When he learns that Fiona has been arrested. He runs to help her.

A fun and quick historical romance following Fiona Mactavish a scientist and Edward Stirling a duke. Five years earlier these two had met and had quite the romance until positions pulled them apart. In this we have to see if they can overcome the odds stacked against them and find happily ever after.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review.

I enjoyed this read mostly…I wish I could have gotten more into it. Wasn’t a huge fan of Fiona or Edward if I’m completely honest.

3.5 ⭐️ // As a Bridgerton fan, How to Deceive a Duke intrigued me, and I was so happy to receive a copy of the book from NetGalley! Unlike Bridgerton, we see society from the lower class’ perspective along with the struggles of being a brillant lady in a community who doesn’t think highly of women.

Description: Five years ago, Fiona and Edward fell for each other and were planning their futures. Well… they were until Edward’s mother convinces him she wouldn’t be a suitable duchess, and then there’s the fact that she thought he was a commoner like herself. Concerned about Fiona’s safety, Edward leaves without saying goodbye, but it’s hard to forget the intelligent woman who saw him for who he is, rather than his title.

Over the years, Fiona has finalized her invention and is seeking a patent, but as a woman in society, she faces many challenges. While dressed as a man, she is charged with a crime, and the duke saves her from being sentenced to prison. However, the condition was she *cough* he would have to live with the duke. It doesn’t take many interactions for them to remember their feelings, but they both have reasons why they don’t think they can be together.

Read this book if …

Fiona is an amazing self-taught inventor seeking to patent matches. Her goal is to achieve financial independence. It was clear in How to Survive a Scandal that she and Edward, the Duke of Wildeforde, had a history, and that he had broken her heart but still had feelings for each other. So I was keen to see his side of the story and glad that's how this book began.

The two of them connect at a deep level, in part because both want to feel loved and understand that need in each other. But they also both make really stupid choices that keep them apart. I found myself yelling at the book and at both of them.

One of the things I love about this Rebels with a Cause series is the social conscience that runs through the books. There's a fascinating subplot about working class protests for rights and against taxes. And I also really like the side characters, most especially Edward's younger brother and sister.

Thank you to Forever for the book. These opinions are my own.

How many times, and in how many different ways, can a heart be broken?

The Duke who crushed her girlhood dreams posts her bail when she is thrown in prison for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Years later they still hold each other’s hearts, and even though every obstacle on earth seems to launch into their path, he is determined to spend his life with her. Even though his arms are the safest place she has ever known, Fiona is determined to resist him because she knows that her ignominy and notorious family will ruin his reputation.

He broke her heart once. Her family has broken her heart countless times. The world breaks her heart and her spirit every single day. She can depend on no one but herself because her journey is full of peril and hardship no one has been willing to share or look beyond.

Until him.

Just some of the reasons I loved this book:

- A second chance romance.

- A full partnership where all the hero wants to do is ensure the woman he loves and believes in gets all of the success she deserves. Even if that means he is only in a supporting role.

- A fierce STEM heroine.
