This was so fun and I loved the characters + the death game so much! Immediately began book #2 of the duology

the writing style was so bad...

1st read: Jan 2022, 5 stars
Loved the writing style that I ended up going back and annotating so many parts, which I don't often do. It's been a while since I loved a book THIS much, that I wanted to give it 6 stars to put it above my other 5 star reads. The book jumps around so much so I'm constantly rooting for different characters and love all of their POVs, but Alistair is definitely my favorite.

2nd read: Sept 2022, 5 stars
I don't normally reread books, and especially didn't expect to reread a book during the same year, but I didn't want to forget any detail before reading the sequel. I once again loved each POV and each character, and Alistair is still a huge favorite, but I'm getting really invested in Briony's plan upon this second read. My favorite parts are the background and history of the families and I'm excited to see where the sequel goes.

DID NOT FINISH: 19%

I did not like any of the characters and the pace leading up to the tournament was too slow.

Went in blind and pleasant surprised by how much I loved this. The generational trauma and all the flaws of these characters were valid. Love the magic system in this.

What I did not love was what I'd say is a forced romance between Isobel and Alistair. They would have made a great team minus the romance, imo.

All in all, I love how messy and messed up the world built in this series. Excited to read the sequel.
