This book is every Morally Grey Character fans next new obsession, it has just about everything you could need. Morally grey characters going against each other, teaming up and possibly falling in love. Also, if you are a fan of THG you will need to pick this up, all the vibes from the hunger games but with magic.

Each character has it’s one unique reason for why they are where they are and just how far they will go. They all had their uniqueness about them, the characters were the best part of the whole story they all just really shined and had such depth.

My favorite was Alistair, I love me a guy whose depicted as a monster but deep down he’s anything but.

The world building was lots of fun and definitely intriguing, I loved the way the authors showed each aspect of the town and how they all revolve around this tournament and just how important magic is to each and everyone of them.

I honestly feel like this book has a little bit for everyone, I can’t wait for everyone to read it because I need some theories about that ending.

This was a super quick read for me and I can’t deny that it was lots of fun; the concept and magic system are both pretty cool. Certain details of the world building near the beginning were sooo interesting and clearly had thought put into them. Officially back on my fantasy kick, everyone cheer.

It’s hard for me to name exactly what didn’t work for me here, but i’m going to try. think my biggest issue is the writing style, which isn’t bad by any means, but often feels like it’s missing something. It’s super bland overall, in my opinion; the atmosphere and tone is fine but the prose is nothing special and certain sections were sooo awkwardly written. This is especially prevalent in the action scenes, which really took me out of the story with how…off they were, for lack of a better word. They weren’t horrible or anything but everything just felt a little stilted and short. I think this is a book with lots of potential in that area, with a premise that seems to promise lots of fighting and such. The characters were good and all but I feel the story wanted me to care about them a lot more, find them a lot cooler than I did, if that makes any sense. One character in particular really got on my nerves (Briony) and while her arc and character traits were important thematically and had good payoff, I just simply didn’t like her, and reading from her pov was really annoying at times. Characters also seemed to be constantly changing their mind, which is obviously just an attempt at dynamic characters, except that it often feels too abrupt and overly-convenient.

also allistair lowe they could never make me hate you
