This book was sitting on my shelf for over a year before I decided to pick it up. So maybe.. I hyped it up way too much and had extremely high hopes that it just couldn't reach.
The entire time I wanted something to hook me, something to get my attention and make me care about the stakes. In reality, this book had all of the pieces and they just didn't fit together for me. I wanted the magic to seem more physical and brutal, maybe. Or perhaps I wanted the characters to seem much more... Interesting? Villainous? There's bits of them there that could be expanded upon to make them compelling and evil and broken down by what their fates really are. But I just felt wholly uninterested.
Not to mention it felt like I was being told everything rather than being shown. The characters wouldn't do anything in particular that made me think "yeah that's evil, but they're so CONFLICTED and you can tell because they did xyz".
Truly, reading the rest of the reviews it seems like maybe this book just wasn't my cup o' tea. Maybe I wanted more dystopian than fantastical.

I found the character to be quite boring/ dull and the plot very slow and not really that interesting.

fantastic! fun twists and turns - although I did want a little more. can’t wait for the finale!
Could not get into the characters and the “high stakes” regarding the high magick was not convincing. Also, after reading the whole plot, a LOT of that was predictable.
Looked up spoilers because I had a sinking feeling in my gut, and yes, I absolutely did get baited, Isobel and Alistair do not end up together, she betrays him. I will not be reading any further, I do not care about the plot, fuck this book.
