I'm definitely going to read the next volume. I'm unsure about the art and format of this but the story seems really good so I want to see where it goes.

What is the point? Being brutal, inventing disgusting people ? Characters felt partly like caricatures. I kept waiting for the red herring while reading violence after violence. Survival of the fittest?

Nope! Not for me. It's a graphic novel about assassin school in the 80's. Sounds badass and obviously, going into this I was expecting sex, drugs and a whole lot of violence but the meandering plot made it all seem pretty gratuitous.

Would have DNF'd but it's so short. We got very little backstory on the main character, very little introduction to the school and a whole lot of nonsensical other things happening. The graphics were good and there was smart dialogue here and there but that's about all I enjoyed.
Sidenote:
Spoiler nothing like having the villain spell out for you that he's the baddest of all the bad villians. Eye rolling so hard right now.

This is my review for the first two volumes of this series. I really liked the artwork and the atmosphere in these books. In Deadly Class we follow Marcus as he is invited to join an assassin's school. The story is gritty, dark and violent, but it has twisted forms of love, idealism and self-exploration that regular teenagers also go through.

What I really appreciate is how the high stakes magnify the high school dynamics that many of us have experienced. At the same time it shows how trauma really affects development of teenagers and also magnifies that.

It is an interesting read, and also just an awesome action and crime series. Recommend!

I’ve been really into graphic novels after finishing the latest installment of Saga, and this one popped up on my GR recommendations feed. Not knowing anything about it really, I decided to give it a go.

The story is about a homeless teenage boy, who gets taken in and recruited into a secret school for assassins. He has a brutal past which is slowly revealed through flashbacks, and which eventually as the story progresses, catches up with him.

While the premise isn’t exactly new, the execution is on point, and is delivered perfectly. Everything seems to have been thought of right down to the classes taken at the academy, Assassin psychology, Beheading, and Poison Studies among others. The Academy even has it's own cliques, just like a real high school, but instead of Preps, Burnouts and Jocks, you have Mexican Cartel, Japanese Mafia and Neo-nazis. However, the thing that really stood out for me, was the beautiful graphics and use of colour. For each scene there were only a few colours used, and it really helped to set the mood and enhance the scene. Some of the scenes are quite gorey, and some of the characters are horrifically disfigured, which just adds to the darkness of the novel.

The overall story was really good, and gathered in pace exponentially. While the main characters past was revealed slowly through the book, there is still so much that you want to find out about him. This is definitely a series that I am going to anticipate the release of the next volume.

I read this because I saw they were going to make a Hulu series or something out of it but unless it's going to be animated, it's a missed opportunity. The book conveys so much through the art and the use of color. It's kind of ugly because the topics it's dealing with are ugly, but the way it conveys the ugliness is simultaneously very elegant.

I didn't love it but I'm wondering if I just got bogged down in meeting all the characters and trying to set up the world they live in. Maybe now that the adventure has begun, we can really get rolling with the heart of the story.
