I bought this graphic novel years ago when I asked my local comic shop employee for recommendations. I don't know why I put it off for so long, I might have just forgotten I had it, but wow the story is so incredibly addicting. I wasn't expected to be blown away by the art either, but there were two spreads in particular that made me really stop and appreciate all the little details.
It's unfortunate that the creators are white men (from my google search), because there are quite a few things I hope get better as the volumes go on... for example the "love interest" MARIA. Lol. Idk why every Latina girl has to be named Maria to underline her "exotic-ness"... she also doesn't seem to be a fully-realized character besides the fact that she likes our protagonist. Same for Saya our other potential "exotic" love interest (she's Japanese)... I'm just hoping for better in the future; I guess I'll see if Remender delivers. Speaking of which, I noticed that Remender is also the writer for Low, which I didn't enjoy at all. I'm super shocked I enjoyed this now that I know this information.

I've read this a few times now and I enjoy it as much now (if not more so) as I did before. Deadly Class was (and remains) one of my favorite graphic novels series. I am glad to see it's gotten some acknowledgement, what with the television series. I haven't watched it (mostly because it seems like a watered down version of the source materials), but if it gets more people reading, I'm on board.
This first volume follows Marcus as he enrolls in King's Dominion, an academy meant to train young adults into fully fledged assassins. This is a series that does not shy away from controversy, graphic violence, language, or drug use. It is an intense journey that has a distinctly grungy vibe to it. Sometimes the storytelling can be a bit pretentious, but overall, this is an excellent start to a series I remain invested in.
