Really enjoyable. Fantastic art style. However, will not be continuing with the series as only the first one is on KU.
The TV show was surprisingly very faithful to the comic. They added some things to fill in the blanks between "chapters" but apart from that it's very close. They also did such a great job with the casting of Saya, Willie and Petra whose actors look so similar to the drawings.
I'm curious to see what happens next because vol.1 and I'm guessing at least part of vol.2 are what we saw in season 1. Still wish they would pick it back up to continue the adaptation.
And hopefully my next review will be more about the comics more so than a comparison with what I already with its adaptation đ

A homeless teen gets recruited into an elite assassin school. Does a really great job of catching the... sadism of high school.
âI mean, civility is just lying to people about your true feelings. Hiding for personal gain. Popular people, well, theyâre just the best liars.â
I loved this!
- the characters,
- the art,
- the plot,
- the aesthetic,
- the quotes,
- the diversity,
- everything!
I watched the show before reading this, but I have to say, both of them are good in their own ways. The show draws out the plot way more, but the book has some more quotes that werenât in the show that I liked.
So donât ask me which was better, because I canât choose.
Marcus also isnât your ordinary protagonist. He definitely deals with a lot of mental issues and the things he said sometimes⌠wow itâs deep. His backstory is pretty traumatic and the anger he holds for the people he hates is pretty intense. One minute heâll be doing something random and the next, heâll hurt or even kill someone (with reason, of course). Heâs basically an outcast of outcasts and you can just instantly tell that thereâs something different about him.
Anything else Iâd say about the other characters might be more from the show so I wonât say anything about them, but I definitely loved them all. (except for brandy, she can honestly go to hell)
Anyway, Iâd recommend this to anyone. Itâs a quick read, but itâs definitely worth it!
Some quotes I liked:
âThis isnât a dress rehearsal, Marcus. You only get the one turn. Life is a series of unique opportunities. Itâs our job to find the happiness in each one.â
âHappiness is just the absence of pain. Itâs the best I can hope for.â
âSheâd died for eight minutes. When she recovered he asked her what it was like. She told him to describe âblueâ.
âJust doesnât matter where theyâre from, kids are all the same. Vicious. Only difference is, in this place⌠the dagger they put in your back is real.â
âMoralityâs just comfort foodâ it holds no meaning outside of our minds. Like the Mona Lisaâ a thing a lot of people imagine value in. Reading something into that idiotic half-smile smear of paint. A group hallucination.â
âEthical compass would be fine if everybody had one. But too many donât play by the rules.â
âIn my mind itâs everyone else whoâs crazy. All polite human interaction is all just a manipulation. A way for people to get what they want from each other.â
âAinât no mystery why you ainât got no friends, motherfucker.â
âSee? Youâre just proving my point⌠nobody likes honesty.â
âSort of gay, isnât it?â
âIf by âgayâ you mean âbrave and honestâ.â
âItâs hard to express honest emotions and to be fearless about sadness. Most people walk around hiding it, as if itâs a weakness, acting tough as if they can fool people into seeing them as something they arenât. Itâs braver to be honest than to pretend.â
âBlood-soaked, overdosed, nearing mental and physical collapseâ all to impress them. All to show them how fucking fearless and cool I am. To hide the truth: Iâm terrified of being alone.â
âWho gives a shit what they think? Well, you do, obviously. You were almost shitting your pants in there because you didnât know elevator etiquette.â
âFinally wanting to live. In a place surrounded by death.â
