I'll admit that the story isn't anything to write home about (and the final issue in this volume is disappontingly unrealistic), but the art is propulsive, energetic, especially during the acid trip, inspired.

This was fantastic .
I always feel there's something lacking when I read graphic novels but despite that, this was definitely a good one.
The artwork in this is actually something to talk about. Coming from someone who loves art, sometimes the artwork in graphic novels really don't succeed in providing the reader with information. The style and colouring in this book however, provide some insight into the characters and the story. For example, when Marcus is high, the art is more brightly coloured than the darkness of the rest of the novel.
Only two years after the Vietnam War, the setting is also something I've never read before. I love that there was all these little bits of politics as well. I loved reading about the street life we know exists and see the reality of it.
Of course, this is dark and messed up so read at your own peril!

A strong start to the series. Eclectic characters, weird situations, and the backdrop of the 80s. What else do you need?

My rating isn’t a rating of the *quality* of this book, but of my *enjoyment* of it. Which is to say that I didn’t enjoy it. I didn’t like any of the characters and so didn’t enjoy the book. It was compelling, in a way. I wanted to see what would happen, but life’s too short to spend my time and money on books which don’t bring me joy or learning.
I would consider borrowing future volumes from the library, but they won’t be anywhere near the top of my list.
