This was a rec for the 12 books by 12 friends challenge! This was charming and cute but I think I’m personally a bit over Pride and Prejudice retellings, so it wasn’t quite a slam dunk for me.

Beatrice Steele isn’t a traditional Regency era girl - she’s much more interested in solving murders than finding a husband or the perfect dress for the ball. She has to keep her true crime passion a secret because of what people will think. But when a man drops dead at the ball, Beatrice can’t help herself: It’s her time to shine and solve this mystery.

I found the mystery of this novel well paced and intriguing. What didn’t quite work for me is how some characters are directly out of P&P (down to their names) while others were eliminated or drastically changed. I think I would have preferred it more if it was just a Regency mystery without the Austen hold on it. I also found the plot with Mary’s secret (I won’t spoil) very interesting but odd? And ultimately it landed out of place to me because it wasn’t delved into more. All in all, very cute and fun but I don’t know if I’ll rush to the sequel. I will say I bopped between the audio and ebook and both were good formats for this one. The narration was very well done, but the ebook contained period recipes and card game rules at the end.

I mean, I’m the target audience for a regency cozy murder mystery. And I was surprised by the humor. I had a little hard time staying with it, it took me a couple weeks to read, but I did start it at a truly horrifying time to live in DC

Utterly diverting and enjoyable.

Would have been a higher rating if Beatrice had joined Caroline in a life of crime or had accepted Daniel’s hand in marriage and been psychopaths together. That’s the book I want to read!

The author was trying too hard to be funny. Still a good book and I enjoyed it. I just don’t think it’s as funny as she was hoping it would be.
