i read this book for one of the february prompts for the diverse baseline challenge. i loved this story, i loved the friendships with deka & all the blood sisters especially britta. i loved the slow burn between deka & keita and how he loves her regardless of any of her circumstances. i loved the found family dynamic as well.

This was a good book. I liked the characters, the worldbuilding is strong, and I struggled with the pacing.

I enjoyed reading this, but the character relationships felt very rushed and left a lot to be desired. A lot of emotional aspects of the book I felt like I was being told I had to care about rather than being showed why I should care about them. Overall, I think the book and storyline in general needed more detail to help me develop actual feelings towards the characters.

Content warning: In adding my review I have included over ten content warnings that I believe are necessary. I think this is an important book to talk about and the way that women are viewed(?). There is just a lot of various forms of violence that women face throughout the book so it is hard to suggest to some of my AFAB, Trans, feminine presenting friends because it touches on experiences that 'women' face in the world. I think if you can accept the content warnings it is overall a good book and potentially going to be a good series.

Some of the writing took away from the story (Repetitive lines, not much left for implication) but the character and story was cool enough to see past it. The beginning was hard for me to grab onto but a few chapters in and I saw the direction a bit better. Overall, nothing super surprising or unique but a good story.

I really liked the book to start but ended disappointed by the underlying social commentary. It pushes really strong at the end. I'm all for books empowering women, and love deep world building, but this book is anti men in a lot of places — a big let down.
