DNF @ 80%

I really tried with this one. Given its ratings, I was expecting something much stronger, but the more I read, the more I found myself questioning how it earned such high praise. The plot is riddled with holes, and the horror—initially promising—gradually fades into something far less compelling.

Two of the biggest issues for me were the overused man saves woman trope (paired with the equally frustrating helpless woman trope) and the awkward use of Native American folklore within a story that centers on an extremely whitewashed couple. It felt surface-level at best and questionable at worst. To top it off, the main character is named after the author, which just adds to the weirdness.

The one concept I actually liked was the sleep-talking element—it had potential. But even that wasn’t enough to save the story for me. At about 80% through, I just can’t keep forcing myself to like it.

actually 3.5 stars. beginning of this book? so freaky i loved it. first chapter alone is horrifying. but this book could've been 100 pages shorter. it got repetitive and i did not like the ending

Loved this!

This book hooked me in the prologue but lost me shortly thereafter. It started to feel very repetitive and probably would have kept my attention a lot better if it had been shorter and more to the point. Some interesting plot points ended without fully explaining and enveloping that content. The end was confusing as well but I don't want to say more and risk spoiling it for anyone.

Overall, it was a good read, but the current substance was about 50-100 pages too long for me.

I said out loud "cute-uh" at the end. Anyways, it is creepy because I talk in my sleep and WHAT IF I'm talking to SOMETHING real
