a heart-wrenching recount on her mother's death ): the details she put in her writing to depict her relationship with her mother made me easily feel her emotions. the last few pages, when she starts to show/describe her mourning, was so devastating, but it was written so beautifully.

slow at times but an incredible illustration of the days leading up to death, and the grief and moral decay of those affected. Interesting ideas of faith and her chapter that gives a description of her mother as a misunderstood young girl made me cry. Amazing

Simone de Beauvoir recounts the ravaging of her mother by Cancer over the course of a few weeks spliced with events that tell more about her relationships (w/ mother, grandmother, sister, father). Obviously this short book was artfully & beautifully written. Beauvoir rawly describes the reality of Cancer & the devastation of witnessing a loved one live & die with it. She also powerfully discusses grief when a relationship with a parent was fraught. Powerful & poignant, she is a master.

Beauvoir details her mother's death in a straight forward manner. The way in which she discusses the quick turn from health and then the steady decline in the death is emotional but very straight forward, and I think that's to reflect how straight forward the entire situation feels like. It's not like a movie, just simple death.
