Thought it might be too weird for me going into it knowing it was a peculiar crossover of anti-war, time travel, and philosophical aliens. And it was weird. But that's fine. Good read.

Ethan Hawke reads this book like he's announcing the PGA Championship. Am I being lulled to sleep or engaged in some awesome Vonnegut here? Wish he was told to speak louder and enunciate. Enjoyed the Vonnegut conversation at the end though.

Setting/World Building: 4/5
Main Character: 4/5
Other Characters: 3/5
Plot: 4/5
Writing: 4/5
Triggering/Issues: 4/5 (Just minor things, mostly the main character's feelings towards his marriage bothered me.)
AVERAGED TOTAL: 3.8/5, rounded up to 4.
I understand the appeal of this book, and it's reasons for being considered a classic. I really did like the message I got in the book, about the results of war and such, and I enjoyed the disjointed story telling as a reflection of the time travel. This is just one of those books that I "got" but didn't love, but also didn't hate, you know? Which I suppose is why it's 4 stars and not 5. Good, but it didn't speak to me or anything.

" '(...) - here's my book.' It is so short and jumbled and jangled, because there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre. Everybody is supposed to be dead, to never say anything or want anything ever again. Everything is supposed to be quiet after a massacre, and it always is, except for the birds."

Totally not what I was expecting from this book! I honestly didn’t fully understand some parts but still enjoyed reading it.

Fun to get back into literary analysis by annotating this one, and was nice to have some better perspective on the times it's been referenced to me. Sticking point for me was the portrayal of women in that it was so awful I wanted to believe it was a commentary on how awful women are treated, but it seems it may simply be a flaw of the writing. A bummer, given that it was very interesting otherwise, but means I'm not likely to pick up any of his other work.
