If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. I loved every moment. The humor, the atmosphere, the heartbreak, all of the characters. I don’t know what to do with myself now that I’m done. I have this feeling, similar to the feeling I had after finishing East of Eden, that I’m somehow a different person for having read this book. It was spectacular, and it’s easily one of my favorites of all time.

it’s hard to put into words how I feel about this book & why I rated it the way I did. I think that there was a clear intent on McMurtry’s part to write a story that is as realistic as possible with realistic people & reactions. There are no heroes in this story, only men who sometimes do heroic things & almost all of them never change or have the chance to grieve what they’ve lost (& there is quite a lot of loss). I think there’s a certain attempt to demand the reader to respect the act of survival & nothing more. it’s compelling, it’s raw, and it’s ugly.
