An outstanding book, characters, and flowing story. Loved being in the West with the Hat Creek Outfit, and various other stories happening at the same time of the groups venture north. Great characters, Gus was a character I'd read more about. Overall I was very into this book, and couldn't put it down.

Normally I wouldn’t read a western but I was on a long road trip with my daughter who said this is her favorite book. The book is very well written and you really get into the characters heads as you go through the book even if you don’t like their decisions. I will have to watch the movie again since I haven’t seen it since the early 90s and remembered nothing other than Robert Duvall was in it.
