You know a book was masterfully written when it not only makes you forget that the majority of characters are horrible people who do horrible things to other horrible people, but actually makes you root for many of them. The wildness of the late 1800’s West created a hypocritical code and the hardships of those living during post-Civil War times reduced priorities to mere survival. And this is how the incredible character development and interactions drew me in. I read several reviews that advised to hang in there through the first 75 pages and I completely agree. While necessary to create a foundation, the page turning doesn’t begin until the large cast of characters start filtering into the story and crossing paths over the course of a very long, deadly year.
