Everyone felt very real. One of the best characterwriting I’ve come across. An absolute tragic story that I in no way could have predicted. Absolute class

I was expecting a lot out of this book! It was my first western novel and it has such fabulous reviews. Reading this book took as much energy as it would take a cowhand to ride from Texas to Montana! I felt I learned a lot about cattle drives and the dangers of the open prairie - I also enjoyed imagining what it would be like to be known by everyone (somehow?) in the plains. This book is described as a love story, and I guess it was, but with no happy endings. I could use one after that story haha

This is a long book. I chose to read it because I'm currently living in Texas. I also have not read much about the frontier.

I did like Gus and Newt the most. I did like Clara and Lorena. Clara was so strong and a great female character. Lorena was so broken. My heart hurt for her, especially after Blue Duck took her. I'm so glad she landed with Clara.

I did not like Call all that much. Especially with him not ever telling Newt he was his son. Especially after it sounding like he wouldn't go back North after burying Gus. It's also super rediculous that he had to go all the way back to Texas. Maybe to Clara's land.

I do like that there were multiple plots. I am surprised with how unexciting July was. I sounds like Clara and he will get married. Maybe because she's so strong, she needs someone week. But I wanted more for his arc.

I did some research and this way oversold the violence from indigenous people. I hate this so much. I'm sure it was still hard with being more historically accurate.

I was surprised with how many of them slept while sex workers. I guess it makes sense.

I wouldn't read it again but don't mind reading it the first time.

This book was an amazing journey and worthy read. Some of the best character development I’ve ever come across. I think I will remember  many characters for a long time.
