This review is a bit hard to write as I don't really know how to judge this book. It's definitely easy to read, and it presents its information in an easy to understand way. It also does a very good job of explaining why emotional intelligence is so important and should be worked on.
The only downside to the book as far as I'm concerned is that its suggestions for improving your emotional intelligence were so broad that for many of them I didn't even know where to start. There were also so many suggestions that I didn't know where I should start from among them. I wish the suggestions had been a bit more straight-forward and more laid out because I just didn't know where I should begin. Also, I told myself I was going to choose one of the suggestions and start trying to apply it, but I've started that about five times now with no success. I just don't even think about it most of the time, and when I do, I don't actually feel like I'm doing anything that's making a difference.
Overall, I think this book is a good introduction to emotional intelligence and presents some great information. I just don't think it's going to actually help me improve my own emotional intelligence. Others may be able to get a lot more out of it.
I received this book for free through Goodread's First Reads.

The subject is not new to me and I really liked how well the information was presented. I kept me engaged. The first part of the book explains the different areas of understanding others and thus how to interact more successfully. the last part lays out concrete actions to take that allow one to advance their skills of being in the shoes of others and how to chose ways to advance their ability to learn and support others.
Short easy read with good information. Take the time and get started!
Shared this book with a coworker I knew would appreciate including this insight as he works on improving his leadership skills.

I really wanted to like this more than I did, but it felt like reading an expanded PowerPoint presentation. The points seemed very basic and some of the tips were too general to be helpful. Better citations, more substance, and more examples would have been a substantial improvement.

Not particularly enlightening. Some of the tips included "take deep breaths" and "sleep on it." This would be better taught as a course and not read in a book. Also there are annoying little bubbles with quotes taken from the book....on the same page. I don't need to read the same sentence twice. The authors also promote previous books they wrote, as well as the actual book itself and their company.
I think everyone will get something different out of this book. If you already have high EQ, you may find it useless. If you have low EQ, deeply valuable.
It was recommended to me to read one exercise per day, and I would definitely recommend this to anyone reading the book. You can sit down and read the book in a few hours, but purposefully slowing down and reading one per day made me think a little bit harder about how I manage emotions. Even if I wasn't consciously thinking about it, I could tell I was processing it in the background because I listened better, I check my emotions better, and I do think it's made an impact on my EQ.
I do think this, or any book on EQ, is a necessary read for anyone in management or looking to advance.
