I read this book while I was on a road trip in the north of Japan from Tokyo to Matsushima. Everyone in the small car (4 people) have read this book and we all consider it was one of the best book we have read this year.

I think I cried at the end. We already knew that Japan, though a beautiful country, wasn't a perfect place because there is no such perfect place in the world. Nonetheless, it's always really tough to confront with the hard reality. Anyway Adelstein's book is very easily readable, is as interesting as a fiction book would be while we really have the feeling it's real there, it must have really happened.

Anyone who has an interest in Japan or anyone really should have a look at this book.

He's a journalist, but this isn't an objective recounting. It's more a series of personal essays.

Eh, it's okay? I'd echo what a lot of other reviews are saying about how Adelstein comes across as a bit of a arrogant narcissist... We're here for the insights into your work as a journalist, not your sex life.

It's a shame the Tadamasa Goto stuff comes so late into the book, it was by far the most interesting part of it to me, and I wish it was fleshed out more.
