Fanny deserved so much better than Edmond.

The last Jane Austen novel I'll ever read, because I've read them all!!!
The main character is 5 a teemager, prone to flights of fantasy and I loved it :D

UPDATE 7/16/24 (a little over 12 years later)

Ahhhhhh cousins to lovers. Truly an under-represented trope.

Jkjkjkjk. I’m not counting this as a re-read because I listened to an abridged dramatization of this, but after revisiting this story I simply had to come back to this old entry so that I could rage a little bit.

Everyone in this story makes me angry. At Edmund for being an absolute stick in the mud, the Bertrams for being vain and selfish and only kind when it’s convenient to them, at the Crawfords for being too self-centered to actually be happy, at Fanny Price for never standing up for herself, and Jane Austen most of all. May she rest in peace.

Was this her first book? It’s the longest of them all, and the most undeserving of such a superlative. There is so much of this story that is unnecessary to the plot. So much waxing and waning on the most tedious of subjects, and so much glaaaazing over the most important plot points. And the play! Do NOT get me started on the dumbest plot point ever that is the play!!

And the fact that we are given so much of Henry’s attempts to win over Fanny, and so LITTLE of Edmund’s change of heart toward her is insane. My sister had me rooting for Henry and then BAMBOOZLED me! He was supposed to be changing! His true love was supposed to make him into a good man! YOU LED ME ASTRAY JANE.

This is well writting but it is not a fun read like some of her other works.

Fanny is a timid, very passive character. She was raised to believe herself lesser then her cousins, and treated barely better then a servent by nearly everyone. Mrs. Norris is straight up abusive, never missing an opportunity to verbally beat her down, forbiding a fire in her cold bedroom, and constantly reminding her how greatful she should be to her Uncle and his family.

This book is honestly sad, it's nice that she does speak up for herself refusing to marry Mr. Crawford but that's the ONLY thing she does the entire book. Everything else is decisions other people made for her without even asking her.
She gets her happy ending, but purely by chance of the love interest finally realizing that he loves her.

This has some of Austen's most dislikable characters in my opinion.
