Well told, mostly well written tales from a gritty, fantastic world. Grim characters sometimes get old, but when you can watch the change, it stays interesting. This collection was great in that it told old and new stories, it built up the Witcher from the ground. Thanks for the recommendation, Tweak. :>
This was good fun. I enjoyed getting to read some fantasy that differed from the Tolkien tradition and especially enjoyed having fairytales mixed in. I felt like the short stories got better as the book progressed—The Last Wish was my favorite—and also appreciated the weaving together of all the stories to make it more than just a short story collection.

I really liked the format of the novel. It has a good storyline with characters that makes you invested in their origins and endings
The language is a bit to simple for me. I personally am a sucker for poetic beautiful language and I espacially like when I find in fantasy. Like in Tolkien, Seth Dickinson or Patricia Mckillip.
So the simple language is a bit of minus for me.
And fantasy is hard cause it has all been done before. Sometimes the story is so good you forget everything else and you just enjoy the ride. Or it brings something new.
This first book has not wowed me. But I want to know what happens next. And that I think is a good grade.

I can TOTALLY see why this was made into a video game - the flow of this was very episodic, having an almost 'collection of short stories' feel. I'm used to epic fantasy, so this was a neat change of pace, and of course i loved the mystery and magic of the witcher himself and his powers. There were parts where i got bogged down, but overall i really liked it, and i will totally be reading the rest of these!
Sapkowski's collection of stories centered around Geralt of Rivia (aka The Witcher) offers a gritty, realistic retelling of classic fairytales, edged with a Sherlock Holmesian air of mystery. A wonderful collection of short stories told in a world of rich depth and intrigue.
